So what is interval training? Basically, it’s a form of exercise where you switch from high to low intensity movements very quickly. This causes your heart rate to jump up while you do the high intensity segment, and staying higher while you do the lower intensity segment.

Interval training allows less intense exercises to burn more calories. Plus, you don’t get tired as quickly which makes your workout session a little longer. If you combine cardio intervals with weightlifting, you can continue to burn calories well after you finish the workout.

Here’s an example of an interval training workout while running.

3 minutes – Warm up, moderate pace

3 minutes – move to intense pace (about 7 out of 10 on a perceived exertion scale).

2 minutes – drop down to level five on the exertion scale.

Repeat last five minutes 5 times.

2 minutes – Cool down, slow pace.

If you want, you can mix it up a bit by substituting weightlifting for the lower exertion periods. This allows you to keep your heart rate high even while you are just lifting weights.

Now, interval training won’t do it all for you. You still have to eat a healthy diet. After a few weeks of interval training, you’ll want to mix things up a bit. Your body gets used to any sort of exercise in just a few weeks. So you may want to switch exercises. For example, switch from running to swimming.
